2009 ANNUAL REPORT

Literacy New York Summer Training Institute (STI)

During the first week in June - trainers, affiliate directors, and board
representatives from affiliates across the state gather at the White Eagle
Conference Center in Hamilton, New York (www.whiteagle.com) for a week of
workshops, networking, and meetings. The Institute's goal is to provide an
intensive staff development opportunity for Literacy New York affiliates
through interactive workshops, forums, and informal discussion with
colleagues.

The Summer Institute includes two tracks:

Track One - Trainers and prospective trainers

STI offers a twelve-hour Training of Trainers Workshop. Other topics of interest to trainers are offered each year and have included:

    • Learning Disabilities Tools and Techniques
    • Research-based Instruction with Beginning Readers
    • Best Plus Test Administrator Training

Track Two - Executive Directors, program/other staff, and board members

A sampling of workshops offered in this tract include:

    • Successfully Involving the Board in Fund Raising
    • Effective Techniques for Publicizing Your Affiliate
    • Understanding the National Reporting System
    • ALIES as a Data Management Tool for New York State
    • Preparing Effective Grant Proposals
    • Building the Effective 21st Century Board

Feedback from attendees about their experience at the Literacy New York
Summer Institute has been extremely positive:

"I appreciated opportunities to share ideas during lunch and dinner as well as during the workshops"

"After attending the Summer Institute, I feel a much greater connection
to other affiliates."

"It's great for planning; I know the Summer Institute will be in early June, and I can get folks lined up to go in advance."

Literacy New York is always looking for possible topics and workshop
presenters for the Summer Training Institute. If you have a suggestion for a
workshop or presenter, please contact Mary Bartlett, Training Coordinator at
