Staff Development

Literacy New York (LNY) program staff provide technical assistance to 41 local, community and agency-based affiliates. LNY’s goal is to “empower, strengthen and support the affiliates of New York to deliver effective adult literacy programs.” LNY works with affiliates to ensure that they are well-governed, well-managed, and are providing quality instruction.

Literacy New York’s Staff Development model includes:

  • LNY Regional Initiative – project includes Tutor Training, Assessment, Intake/Survey and Data Management/Input/Oversight (ASISTS database) Committees reviewing, enhancing and developing materials/training/centralized systems to streamline LNY network operations, management, and tutor training.
  • LNY/ProLiteracy Accreditation – LNY mandates national ProLiteracy Accreditation for all affiliates in New York. With funding from the Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation, LNY is providing ongoing Accreditation technical assistance and paying the ProLiteracy Accreditation fee for 41 affiliates. LNY's Accreditation consultant meets with affiliates to review the Accreditation standards and process, and to share resources and best practices. The consultant has provided seminars on strategic planning and annual planning as it relates to Accreditation. LNY strongly believes that Accreditation “provides a framework within which local organizations can establish diversified and stable funding, strive for ongoing program and organizational improvement, provide opportunities for stakeholder and student involvement, and be responsive to the ethnic, cultural, and economic diversity in their communities.” While all of the 16 Accreditation Standards are necessary competencies for effective adult literacy organizations, the Organizational Management standards: Planning, Community Linkages, and Fiscal Management will be critical as affiliates navigate the 2009 – 2012 economic outlook for New York State. More than ever, the Accreditation process will help strengthen local organization structure and provide stability. It is a “tool for making successful program improvements and a means by which quality and success can be affirmed.”

  • Summer Training Institute – annually, LNY provides a week long Institute with 15 to 20 workshops on training, assessment, resource development, marketing and public relations, instructional technology, data management, staff/board/ nonprofit issues. Approximately 200 participants attend the June event.
